Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit beat out Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald at the Democratic state convention at Huntington Place on Sunday for the attorney general nomination.

Delegates favored Savit over the higher-profile McDonald, who appeared on cable news stations during the prosecution of Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley and his parents. Savit is regarded as being more progressive than McDonald.

Instead of a primary election, the attorney general nominee is picked by party delegates at the annual party convention.

Savit will face off against Republican Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd.

“We’re on the front line right now,” Savit said from the convention stage Sunday, according to the Detroit News. “We’re facing challenges from Washington, D.C. We’re facing challenges from the corrupting influence of money in our politics. But what you see reflected on this stage is a hopeful vision for the future.”

After her defeat, she issued a statement:

I am deeply grateful for all of you who stood shoulder to shoulder with me throughout this campaign. To our incredible team, volunteers, and supporters – thank you for believing in me and everything our campaign represents.

I am extremely proud of the campaign my team and I have run and I am so proud of what we represent. We spent the past 10 months listening to everyday Michiganders from each and every county, and what I’ve learned is that we cannot leave anyone behind, there is room for all of us. The work continues.
